As Grace made her way to the front door, she kept her eyes focused on the three grey dots flickering within a conversation bubble. Sully wasn’t always the fastest text responder so the fact that he was already replying laced Grace’s anticipation with worry.

His reply marked the screen with a one-word response that made a million follow-up questions line up in her head, like soldiers in formation.

Chapter Ten

Grace pushed the café door open, sounding the bell overhead. Being late morning, the breakfast crowd had already left and the lunch crowd hadn’t yet arrived, and for that she was grateful. As promised, Barb sat in a quiet booth clutching a mug of coffee. By the time Betts’s car was out of sight yesterday afternoon, Grace had made a call to Barb, asking her to get the case files for August 12, 1955. The two had planned to meet at the café, away from the station, so curious fellow officers wouldn’t catch on to what they were doing. Barb had taken an early lunch and Grace extended her morning meeting at the high school. She had to give one final safety lesson on social media to the graduating class, preparing them before they set off to college.

“Thanks for meeting me,” Grace said, as she slid into the booth, making sure not to sit directly on the tear in the seat. The Bridgeton Café had been around for years and while it continued to thrive as a favorite for breakfast and lunch among the locals, the owners failed to upgrade the essential equipment—like furniture for the customers.

“You know me . . . always ready to sneak an old case file for you.”

“You’re the best.”

Just as Grace was scanning the room for familiar faces, the waitress approached the table, presenting her with a steaming cup of coffee. “Good morning, Detective McKenna,” the thirty-something waitress said. Grace stealthily scanned her eyes over the girl’s nametag. “Good morning, Lexi . . . can I just get a side of rye toast with butter.”

“Yes ma’am.” Lexi looked over at Barb, tacitly requesting her order.

“I’ll have the meat lovers if you’re still serving breakfast?”

“All day every day.” Lexi winked and turned on a heel.

“Princess, I always knew that you were a semi-celeb in this town but even the diner waitresses know who you are.” Barb raised her eyebrows, mocking surprise.

“That’s all Mark.” Grace retorted. Ever since Mark had opened a successful gym in town her stardom as sole female detective seemed to skyrocket. She was like the first lady of the town fitness guru. “So . . . you got the file?”

“Would I disappoint you?” Barb pulled the file from her messenger bag.

Grace flipped open the worn manila envelope as surprise made an obvious expression on her face. “That’s it?” The envelope contained only a few thin sheets of paper with notes.

“My thoughts exactly.” Barb leaned forward on the table, her eyes set on Grace. “An accidental shooting at the home of one of the wealthiest families in town and this is all they have to show for it.
